Which platform should you choose? If your project requires a main busbar above 4000A, more than 22 outgoing circuits per section, back-to-back cabinet layouts, or high-density data center deployment — MNS is the correct choice. For 4000A and below with cost sensitivity, GCS draw-out switchgear remains the more economical option.

Drawer Operation Workflow
Fault Detection & Alarm
Protection relay trips and signals the fault. The faulty functional unit is identified without affecting adjacent circuits.
Open Breaker
Operator opens the breaker locally or remotely. Mechanical interlock prevents unintended operation during maintenance.
Drawer to Test Position
Drawer is turned to the Test position — main circuit isolated, control circuit still live. Trip/close operation and interlock logic can be verified safely.
Swap or Service the Unit
Drawer is fully withdrawn to the Disconnected position. A spare drawer of the same rating is inserted and locked. No busbar shutdown required.
Return to Service
Drawer is turned back to the Connected position, breaker is closed, and the circuit is restored. Total downtime: typically under 30 minutes.
Structural Design Advantages
1/4 Module Granularity
MNS is the only mainstream draw-out platform with 1/4 module drawer granularity. This allows up to 36 circuits per section — roughly 64% more density than GCS — cutting cabinet count and floor space.
25mm Module Hole Pitch (DIN 43660)
Frame uses C-shaped steel profiles with 25mm hole spacing. Functional units can be repositioned or added without redesign or rewiring the busbar system.
Maintenance-Free Busbar System
ESLOK thread-locking screws with conical spring washers and Alu-zinc coated copper bars eliminate routine busbar retorquing — reducing lifecycle maintenance costs.
Up to Form 4b Separation
Busbar, functional unit, and cable compartments are fully isolated with metal partitions. Fault propagation between adjacent units is prevented, and live circuits remain protected during drawer service.
Double-Sided Cabinet Layout
MNS supports back-to-back and duplex arrangements with a common main busbar. This configuration can reduce footprint by up to 60% compared to single-sided alternatives.
Digital & SCADA Ready
Supports Modbus RTU, Profibus DP, Modbus TCP, Profinet, and IEC 61850. Temperature sensors for Emax2 breakers and ABBAbility condition monitoring enable predictive maintenance.
Industry Applications
Power Plants
Auxiliary power distribution and motor control centers for large single-unit capacity plants. The draw-out design minimizes downtime during routine breaker maintenance. See Medium Voltage Switchgear for upstream distribution.
Petrochemical Plants
Motor control centers for pumps, compressors, and process equipment. MNS low voltage draw-out switchgear handles large-scale petrochemical needs for centralized power control and computer interface. See the MNS & GCS low voltage switchgear range.
Data Centers
LV main distribution for co-location and hyperscale facilities. High circuit density per section and digital monitoring support N+1 redundancy architectures. Pair with the Remote-9001 SCADA monitoring unit.
Metallurgy & Mining
Rugged construction for dusty, high-temperature environments. 100kA withstand capacity handles the high fault currents typical of heavy industrial distribution. Integrates into YBM prefabricated substations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum current rating of MNS draw-out switchgear?
The MNS system supports a main busbar rated current up to 6300A. Standard configurations include 1600A, 2500A, 4000A, and 6300A. The vertical distribution busbar is rated up to 1500A. Short-time withstand current is available up to 100kA for 1 second, and peak withstand current up to 220kA.
What is the difference between MNS and GCS draw-out switchgear?
MNS uses a 25mm module hole pitch versus GCS at 20mm. MNS supports 1/4 module drawer granularity and up to 36 circuits per section, while GCS minimum is 1/2 module with up to 22 circuits. MNS also supports double-sided cabinet layouts and short-circuit withstand up to 100kA. See GCS draw-out switchgear for comparison.
What standards does MNS switchgear comply with?
MNS low voltage draw-out switchgear is certified to IEC 61439-1/-2 (low-voltage switchgear assemblies) and IEC TR 61641 Ed.3 (arc fault protection, criteria 1 to 7). Arc-proof certified up to 690V and 100kA. Protection degrees IP30, IP40, and IP54 are available.
What motor starter configurations are available?
MNS withdrawable motor starter drawers support direct-on-line (DOL), reversing, star-delta, soft-start, and variable frequency drive (VFD) configurations. Standard module sizes include 4E, 8E, 12E, and 16E. Motor control and protection units such as ABB UMC100.3 and M10x are supported.
How many circuits can fit in one MNS section?
A single MNS section can accommodate up to 36 circuits when using 1/4 module drawers. This makes MNS one of the highest-density draw-out switchgear platforms available, significantly reducing cabinet count and floor space requirements.
Does MNS support digital monitoring and SCADA integration?
Yes. MNS low voltage draw-out switchgear supports serial communication protocols including Modbus RTU, Profibus DP, Modbus TCP, Profinet, and IEC 61850. ABBAbility condition monitoring and temperature sensors for Emax2 circuit breakers are available for predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics. See Remote Monitoring Units for integration details.
